Macon family cares for dog evacuated during Hurricane Florence

After a Basset Hound stumbled into a Macon family's yard, they find out she is from North Carolina where Hurricane Florence hit.

For about a week now, a Macon family is taking care of a Hurricane Florence dog.

Wednesday night they finally heard from the Basset Hound's original owners. The family says the dog, Sadie, is a 7-year-old Basset Hound. Jim Waters says she just showed up one day.

"She was trying to dig into our fence, under our picket fence, and my daughter, Anna, actually found her out there and let her in," said Waters.

He says the signs his daughter posted in the neighborhood were washed away by Hurricane Michael. They took their search for Sadie's owner to Facebook.

"Nobody really responded at all and we got concerned, so we thought she might have a chip," said Waters.

After a trip to vet, they found out Sadie's chip wasn't registered. They made calls to six different chip manufactures to find where she got her chip.

"She was chipped at a vet at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. We were like, 'Oh, my goodness, this dog was an evacuee from Hurricane Florence,'" said Waters.

After one more post on Facebook, they heard from Sadie's owners, who are now in North Carolina.

"She may not be the only one that's out there in this area that's looking for their family," said Waters.

Sadie belongs to a young couple with four kids. He says they told him another family in Monroe County were supposed to be watching her.

"You know, it's just a tough situation and I know some people really struggle with, 'Should I leave my pet behind or bring them along?'" said Waters.

Waters says the owners plan to bring her home in about a week.
