'How in the world could we get a verdict of 'not guilty?'' Crystal Walker's mom speaks out on acquittal of accused killer

Crystal Walker was beaten and stabbed to death in her east Macon apartment in 2015.

MACON, Ga. — Crystal Walker's family is speaking out after a Bibb County jury found her accused killer "not guilty."

That person was Walker's husband, Willis Roberts.

Walker's family tells 13 WMAZ they're heartbroken at the jury's decision to let Roberts walk.

"How in the world could we get a verdict of not guilty?" says Walker's mother,  Angela Walker-Curry. "How can someone take a life that was not given to them and then just go scot-free with this?"

On September 6, 2015, Walker-Curry found her 35-year old daughter, Crystal Walker, brutally beaten to death inside her east Macon apartment.

Months later, authorities arrested Roberts, and Walker-Curry says that's because he was nowhere to be found after Walker died, including her funeral. Walker-Curry says her daughter was preparing to leave Roberts just before she was killed.

During the trial, Walker-Curry says the prosecution told jurors Roberts' blood was found at the crime scene, and that he told investigators he hid her car after she died.

Walker's cousin, Vernita Chappell, says she sat in on Roberts' trial and noticed members of the jury falling asleep.

In the end, the jury sided with the defense, and Roberts is now a free man.

"Well, Willis, you may have won this one, but when the Lord says He's won, then you have to pay the consequences there. It's not over until the Lord says it's over," says Walker-Curry.

"It's devastating," says Chappell. "There's so much evidence to prove he did this. She [Crystal Walker] got caught up with the wrong guy. How did this man get away with this?"
