Freeman elected new Monroe Co. sheriff

Brad Freeman beat out Lawson Bittick in the runoff election. Freeman will replace John Cary Bittick, who was sheriff for around 35 years.

Captain Brad Freeman won the runoff election Tuesday night against Lawson Bittick III for Monroe County Sheriff.

Results came in just after 9 p.m., with Freeman winning 4,016 votes and Bittick winning 3,101 votes.

Freeman has served in the Monroe County Sheriff's Office for 32 years.

The two runoff candidates were chosen in the November election, after six candidates appeared on the ballot.

Freeman will be replacing Bittick's father, John Cary Bittick, who spent 40 years in the sheriff's department and at least 35 of them as sheriff.

John Bittick was confirmed as United States Marshal for the Middle District of Georgia back in April.
