JULIETTE, Ga. — An on-duty Monroe County firefighter -- identified as Deane Comer -- responded to a call in Bolingbroke Friday to find it was his own home on fire.

Fire investigators say the cause of the fire is unknown, but the home is a total loss.

Comer’s 12-year-old son was home at the time of the fire and was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. He was then taken to The Medical Center and later transported to the Augusta Burn Center.

Monroe County Emergency Services says his family has a place to stay now, but they need things like clothing, toiletry items and pet care.

Firefighters will be at station #4 this weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to collect Visa and Wal-Mart gift cards for the family.

The address of that station is 8037 Rivoli Rd. in Juliette.
