Community helps Hawkinsville woman and her 6 kids after they lose almost everything

"I'm just happy that somebody is out there to help me and my family and to give back to us."

MACON, Ga. — A Hawkinsville family came home to find almost all of their belongings thrown out. That's after the city's housing authority made a mistake. Now, the community is chipping in to help them bounce back. Kimberly Snell says her family means the world to her, especially her kids.

"They're the reason why I get up in the morning, go to work, get up as early as I do all the time to try and make a better life for us to have something," said Snell.

But one day, she was worried when she pulled into the Henry Way Apartments to find they had almost nothing -- no clothes, no beds, and almost no furniture.

"I didn't know what was going on. I thought maybe somebody robbed me. I was scared," said Snell.

Oscar Mason with the city's housing authority sent a letter saying it was a mistake. He says their contractor went to the wrong apartment and started cleaning it out. So Snell started a GoFundMe page and has raised almost $950.

"I'm just happy that somebody is out there to help me and my family and to give back to us," said Snell.

People also donated mattresses when they found out the kids were sleeping on the floor and donated clothes to keep the family warm. Anna Stewart gave a few items and says she was heartbroken when she heard what happened.

"Anytime that a tragedy or a loss happens in this community, we always come together and support one another," said Stewart.

Snell says as she looks at a few pictures of the kids and thinks about the donations, she has some relief.

"It's going to make the kids feel more at home, more at ease," said Snell.

Oscar Mason with the housing authority says they are working to correct any wrong done to Snell as soon as possible. Snell says anyone who would like to donate items can drop them off at Pulaski County Elementary School and let faculty know it's for the Snell family.
