Bibb County out of replacement trash carts

Around 1,600 people in the county are asking for a new garbage or recycling carts.

More than a thousand people across Bibb County are reporting damaged garbage bins and asking for new ones, but they are still waiting for the county to deliver a new one.

The county says they don’t have anymore to share.

The top of Sherry Mitchell’s garbage cart has been missing since last year.

“It does draw flies, they're even flying around right now,” said Mitchell.

She says the trash collectors who came to pick up her trash accidentally took the lid with them and now it's starting to cause a bug problem.

“It was disgusting-looking. There were maggots over the outside and I poured bleach in it," Mitchell said.

She reported the problem to the county's solid waste department last November and then again in February.Monday, a family member submitted a complaint to the SeeClickFix app.

Mitchell is just one of 1,600 people in the county to ask for a new garbage or recycling cart.

The county says there are no more garbage cans to be given out.

Chris Floore, county spokesperson, says the solid waste department is waiting on commissioners to vote on a new garbage proposal that could put advanced disposal in charge of maintaining carts.

If it doesn't get approved, the solid waste department would need to buy more trucks, hire more people, and order more carts to keep up with the current plan.

Mitchell says she imagines it's hard to fulfill all of the orders, but she would like for the solid waste department, or anyone else, to fulfill their promise and give her family a new can..

“I’m really not the complaining type, but really if we could, I’d like to get a trash can. Maybe this will help me get a trash can,” said Mitchell.
