'Abused, But Not Broken:' Macon woman's book about her sexual abuse turned into a play

A Macon woman is turning her book about her painful past into a play, to try and make a difference in the lives of others

MACON, Ga. — Queen Hayes says she's still not over the years of abuse.

"He abused me first, then he raped me, then he mauled me," said Hayes.

Her accused rapist, her own cousin, allegedly left damage that prevents her from birthing children.

She says the members of her church help fill that void.

"The Lord put me in ministry for that reason, I don't want to see anyone, male, female, anybody go through abuse," said Hayes.

Hayes began sharing her story with people at church and realized she wasn't alone.

She wanted to help others in a similar situation, so she decided to write down her story in a book: "Abused, But Not Broken."

Now, Hayes is turning her story into a play, and she has plans to turn it into a movie.

The play is called "Shhh... Don't Tell," and actors have been rehearsing every Friday.

The play will be performed for just one night on Feb. 8, starting at 6 p.m.

Hayes says they plan on having it at Macedonia Baptist Church at 600 Eisenhower Parkway in Macon.

She says watching the scenes play out gets her very emotional.

"It's a deep pain, and you don't get over this kind of pain overnight," said Hayes.

She says she was called by God to tell her story.

"I didn't always have that father figure, but when I was called into the ministry, I became a born-again Christian. I found the father that would never let me down," said Hayes.

She wants to continue advocating for victims of abuse to get them the support they need.

Hayes hopes the upcoming play and movie will continue to open people's eyes to the problem.
